Funny thing is, i was doing all the swinging behind my back and I kept missing and my back would feel really tight after splitting. I tried your method and its much more effective. Thank You.

Great video. Thanks. I just installed a wood add-on boiler and don’t plan on dropping and splitting my own wood next year. Perhaps a video on dropping and prepping the tree with a chain saw.

piece of advise, get a tire on top of your block so the wood doesn’t fly everywhere.

Well done. Straight to the point. Hadn’t swung an axe in years and was looking to jog my memory. Thanks.

If your’re up to doing it – would you show us how to sharpen a maul and a hand axe?- there are no mountain men to learn from in the UK anymore! Thanks.

Very useful – thank you – works a treat with a maul and you illustrate an easy technique very clearly. Thanks

I remember at my cabin when I was a kid my grandfather teaching me how to split wood. I was using an axe and him a maul, I was having trouble and asked him for the splitting maul, well I couldn’t split with it either, he split with both no problem, he was awesome.

I didn’t read all the coments so this might have already been mentioned. The only other tip I would add is….when you look at a log on the side you are going to be striking you will see where the wood is begining to crack (split). Line that up paralel with your strike and it will split easier. But great video. I use to be the one that would swing it all the way around and try to muscle the tool.

…totally agree with you on missing, it’s actually quite scary. I missed once when I first started splitting and grazed my pinky toe taking a nice little slice clean off. I easily could have taken some toes off too.

Tip: Don’t split would barefoot or in flip flops (I was stupid, probably still am)

Also, it’s much easier to split wood that is easy to split. ( yeah that sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised)

Trying to split some gnarly old oak or petrified eucalyptus just ain’t going to happen no matter how strong you think you are. However, when you go to split some seasoned cedar, your axe or maul will tear through it like warm butter…. such a nice feeling, and really a great stress release! Just don’t do hard wood, ’cause you’ll get more pissed off and hurt yourself.

Thanks dude, figured splitting logs is easy, Wrong! wondering my back hurts it’s because i wasn’t letting the tool do the work. That little trick of throwing the end up first is really cool.
